Statement on Hastings Birds Rescue & Jackie Cullen
24 December 2009
WRAS would like to issue this statement in respect of the recent media reports on Hastings Birds Rescue and the activities of Jackie Cullen. WRAS would like to confirm that we are not associated with, do not send casualties to, nor advise people to use Hastings Bird Rescue nor Jackie Cullen. She is not funded by, nor working with East Sussex WRAS. WRAS was under the impression she had not been rescuing wildlife for many years. Over 10 years ago WRAS attempted to help Miss Cullen and improve her facilities but WRAS has not been involved with her since.

It is very easy to assume a bird has been abandoned when you find it on the ground, but quite often it is a fledgling learning to fly. When a fledgling takes its first flight it is going to be unsuccessful, it is natural for them to spend 2-3 days on the ground sometimes before they can fly properly. Mum and dad will normally be nearby but they do not always fly down to feed every few minutes as they are trying to encourage the youngster to fly. Both the youngster and the parents are good at hiding themselves.
